Mastering the Biomechanical Dimension of Breathing with Integrative Breathing Therapy (IBT)
Breathing is more than a vital function—it’s a complex, interconnected system that shapes posture, movement, and emotion.
In clinical practice, dysfunctional breathing mechanics often underlie musculoskeletal pain, autonomic imbalance and compromised recovery.
This two-day workshop with Dr Courtney offers osteopaths and healthcare practitioners an advanced framework for assessing and restoring optimal breathing function.

IBT integrates the biomechanical, biochemical, and psychophysiological dimensions of respiration within a unified airway concept, helping clinicians understand how dysfunction in one area reverberates throughout the entire system.
Through hands-on instruction and practical case application, participants will learn:
-
the role of the biomechanical dimension within the three dimensional IBT model (biomechanical, biochemical, psychophysiological) and the unified airway concept
-
to apply the EAARS principle for functional breathing assessment
-
to perform the Manual Assessment of Respiratory Motion (MARM) to evaluate breathing patterns with precision
-
the Breathing Muscle Reset, a set of manual techniques designed to rebalance respiratory musculature and improve whole-body integration
-
a personalised, home-based breathing practice that supports ongoing self-regulation and rehabilitation of your patients
IBT recognises that breathing is a system made up of functionally and neurologically linked parts such as the nose, upper airway, thorax and diaphragm. It recognises that breathing has many primary and secondary functions with the potential to heal via a range of mechanisms. Assessment and treatment of all dimensions of breathing and various parts of the breathing system may be necessary for ideal treatment outcomes.
Guided by Dr Courtney and based on more than two decades of clinical research, IBT provides a unique, evidence-informed approach that aligns perfectly with the osteopathic principle of treating the whole person.
Join Dr Courtney to deepen your understanding of functional breathing, enhance your manual therapy outcomes, and expand your clinical toolkit with strategies that unite structure and function through breath.

Many thanks to the support for this workshop by Yusung Kim, we most appreciate his enthusiasm and commitment
"I’m Yusung Kim , the host of the Seoul workshop. I’m an exercise physiologist and exercise therapist based in Seoul, South Korea. My work focuses on rehabilitation and exercise programming for people with musculoskeletal conditions, metabolic disease, and older adults with sarcopenia, as well as athletes. I first became deeply interested in breathing in 2011 while working at a university hospital sports medicine center, where I noticed that many patients had significant breathing-related issues. Since then, I’ve continued to study breathing and have been actively educating both professionals and the general public in Korea on the importance of breathing."
