Join Dr Courtney, as she brings her unique perspective to retraining and rehabilitating the nose and upper airway.

  • Improve your clinical problem-solving.

  • Better serve your clients and help treat more difficult cases.

  • Develop a deeper understanding of how the respiratory system connects with the nose and upper airway.

  • Developed with the support of The Breathe Institute, this comprehensive one-day training offers new breathing- and neuroplasticity-based protocols and techniques to support nasal and upper-airway health.

The full day workshop has been recorded and includes:

  • 7 hours of video presentation

  • Questions and participant discussion

  • Practical content

  • Opportunities to practise techniques

  • Pdfs of the presentation

What you will learn

This course explores key clinical and physiological questions, including:

  • The role of the sinuses and approaches to supporting sinus health

  • How the vagus nerve and sympathetic nervous system influence nasal breathing

  • How the nose connects with the brain and respiratory control

  • How neuroplasticity can be used to retrain nasal and upper-airway function

  • Cranial-nerve perspectives relevant to functional nasal and upper-airway rehabilitation

Participants will learn how to apply Dr Courtney’s Functional Nasal Breathing Rehabilitation Protocol—a practical, comprehensive approach designed to improve multiple dimensions of nasal function.

The protocol was published in the International Journal of Orofacial Myology and Myofunctional Therapy. The associated study reported that participants found the approach understandable, enjoyable, easy to practise, and effective.

About the IBT approach

The recording also introduces the theoretical foundations and breathing-based techniques used within the Integrative Breathing Therapy system to support rehabilitation of nervous-system control of the tongue and upper airway.

IBT is a person-centred approach to airway optimisation and breathing retraining. It is individualised, comprehensive, and multidimensional, viewing breathing as a system of functionally and neurologically linked structures—including the nose, upper airway, thorax, and diaphragm.

This systems perspective recognises that breathing has multiple primary and secondary functions and may support health through a range of physiological and behavioural mechanisms.

Key learning objectives

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  • Understand theoretical principles and clinical tools used in Integrative Breathing Therapy

  • Recognise the practical importance of functional and neurological links between upper-airway disorders—such as nose and throat dysfunction—and dysfunctional breathing

  • Understand nasal, tongue, and upper-airway dysfunction from a breathing-systems perspective

  • Apply IBT approaches and techniques to improve nasal and upper-airway function

Who it is for?

This recording is designed for:

  • Speech and language pathologists

  • Orofacial myofunctional therapists

  • Physical therapists

  • Osteopaths

  • Chiropractors

  • Integrative-medicine practitioners

  • Buteyko practitioners

  • Naturopaths
